Still Going To Work In 2020? Landscapers Are!

Are you still going to work? I bet if you are in the industry I am in you are. You see, I am in the landscape business and there is no working from home in this profession. No Zoom meetings, no wearing PJ’s till noon, no skipping out for a quick workout during lunch. None of that, nada, nope. We tend to work outdoors, and you just cant really bring all that outdoor stuff inside. Generally we social distance by default because we work on landscape projects that include mowing big honkin areas with big honkin equipment. Sometimes we plant things like trees and shrubs which requires digging and no one wants to be digging right next to another sweaty person so again, social distancing is in full force here too.

Now I happen to have a different role in the business, I’m what is called an owner. Thats just a fancy term for the guy who has to do all the shit no one else wants to do. My particular role requires me to drive around in my truck and do things like job inspections, customer meetings and the occasional unexpected pop in on one of my crews. I also frequent the local Starbucks from time to time, but I go through the drive through. I tend to social distance pretty much because I’m by myself all the live long day. On the rare occasion that I do have to interact with another human I don the mask like everyone else in the human race.

This year has been far from great, and we still have the holidays to get through yet. I do have to say that us landscape types have been very lucky during this tough time. We have been busy, have been deemed essential and have been able to work pretty much all year. Thats a win for those of us in this business, we should be counting our blessings at this point. I can only hope that things change for the better next year, but until then we will keep up with the social distancing landscape work. We will stay busy and we will not be working in our PJ’s.
