It’s almost August, I mean you may not even start reading this until August so if that is the case I apologize.
I bring up the month because I came across some notes I was writing back in May. Man, how things change so fast. Think back to April and May and how hectic things were for your company. I know they were for mine. The notes I wrote down went something like this:
May 2018
– My focus is survival right now, all new people, new managers, downsized and it’s all happening at once..Help!! (well I didn’t write the help part but it’s how I felt!)
– Very stressed, I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster, constantly up and down.
– All new people, new field employees, new staff. Need to maintain and get through spring.
– Some customers are not happy, need to fix this fast!
And on it went.
In case you don’t remember I have had big changes at my company. I lost / fired pretty much everyone who worked for me and I downsized my company by over 20% all at the same time. Some of it was planned and some of it was not. It was pure insanity and it happened right as spring had sprung. I had to act fast, hire new people and try to operate on a budget that was going to be at least 20% less than last year.
Now it’s almost August and I am still in transition but I am happier than I have been in a long time. A lot of things still need work. Some things are way better. I am working harder than I have in a long time. I needed the change. There is more change ahead. It’s a different company now and I know I needed that.
I am telling you this because if you happen to be in a bad place with your company I want you to know you can change it. I know how it feels to think things like “If I lose Joe I wont know what to do he’s my right hand man” or “If I lose customer x, y or z I’ll be in big trouble” Maybe you will, but theres a good chance you won’t. I had the same thoughts and I was wrong. Really wrong and now I see that trying to hold onto something because of preconceived notions is a bad idea. Worrying about all the bad things that MIGHT happen is self defeating. I’m just saying if you are in a bad place with your company ask yourself this: If I keep going the way things are what will this company look like one year from now? Do you like what you see?
Thanks for reading.
